Tennessee had to say goodbye to a true icon as Pat Summitt left the basketball program due to complications of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. In a state where college football only matters, Pat made Women’s Basketball a dynasty and forced everyone to not only pay attention but to celebrate all that she had done with the program and Tennessee Athletics. She was a fierce competitor and someone who struck fear into her opponents and everyone just from looks on the court.
She brought Tennessee women’s basketball over 1,000 wins and 8 national titles. Hard to argue with numbers that Pat was one of the best there is as a coach and also as a person. The movement #webackpat started as rumors that had been leaking out were confirmed of her condition and that she would be retiring.
It also says a lot when the women’s college basketball hall of fame was put just a few blocks from Thompson-Boling arena in Knoxville.
Pat was undeniable!
It’s not surprising that losing such an Icon to the Tennessee community would bring everyone together to honor all Pat Summitt has done for our university. Recently an online petition was started to rename Thompson-Boling arena after the late Pat Summitt. Although the University of Tennessee is steep in tradition, as all universities are, I would suspect the petition will fall on deaf ears. Should we rename Thompson-Boling? YES!! For all that Pat Summitt has done for the university and women’s college basketball, it is a perfect time for just a little bit of change by the University.
You can find the online petition here at: The Pat Summitt Petition. While there are mixed opinions about the petition for the change, if the University doesn’t do it, many years from now, we all probably of wished they had.
