Packing a Good Start

First, before I get started with anything, I have to admit my frustration that our “home opener” is not actually a home opener but rather the first game of the season played in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome.  Most Vol fans will freely express displeasure with this since our home opener is also surrounded by the biggest North American fireworks show on Labor Day called Boomsday and is also another reason why I attend all home openers.

None the less, I sat at home with the TV on watching the Vols look very impressive against the NC State Wolfpack.  A team that experienced some impressive wins in 2011 and very well could’ve started our season off poorly.  Tennessee put on a show in the first quarter rolling NC State and holding them to only 14 point in the first half.

Sal Sunseri’s defense seemed to be a nice fit for NC State holding them to only 1 touchdown in 3 quarters despite loads of criticism from fans and sports writers that a 3-4 defense would not work in the SEC. Only time will tell as the schedule moves on and we start to play teams that aren’t in the powerpuff ACC.

For now, however, Vols fans will take a good start to the season and hope, pray, sprinkle pixie dust, or whatever they can to convince themselves that this is the year and Derek Dooley was the right hire.
